Principal's Message

Welcome to the Hughes Elizabeth Lakes Union School District Webpage,

We are a small Kindergarten through eighth grade school district nestled in the hills above the Antelope Valley. We still have small class sizes and will continue to have small class sizes for the 2010-2011 school year.

Our teachers are highly qualified and we have high test scores because of the hard work and dedication that our staff, parents and students put into learning. Our school has worked hard to have an API of 852. All of our students and significant subgroups are making state and federal targets for achievement. This is a beautiful place to have your student go to school and we have many students that come to us from the Antelope Valley because of the positive aspects of our district.

We have small class sizes in our middle school while continuing to offer a “traditional” middle school schedule of five core classes (Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science and Physical Education) plus an elective. Our students receive a rigorous curriculum and are held accountable for their work and grades from school staff and their family.

We have been designated as a California Distinguished School by the State of California because of our work in Response to Instruction (RTI) and Student Academic Success (SAS) Programs.  Our RTI program is school wide and we monitor the students learning in Language Arts and help students achieve to the standards at their grade level. The teachers are constantly working with the students--both those who need extra help and those who need to be stimulated to work harder at the high end. All students benefit from this program.

Our SAS program works with 6th, 7th and 8th grade students who are failing any of their core academic subjects. I meet with each of these students individually and help them develop a plan that will make them successful for the next quarter. We sign a contract together and then the contract goes home to their parents so they know what the plan for success will be. This has proven to be highly effective in raising the number of students who meet graduation requirements.

I invite you to come and tour our school and see the wonderful and exciting education we can offer to your students. Our campus helps students learn to be responsible and provides an excellent education in an atmosphere that supports students as they develop into outstanding members of the community.
